Go and Make What?
The Church today has gotten away from the great commission. (Mt 28:19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age). I’m not saying God can’t use anything for His glory because He can. Even the disciples questioned Jesus when they saw someone casting out demons in His name; that was not one of them. Jesus responded in Mr 9:40, “For he who is not against us is on our side.” According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, there are roughly 44,000 different denominations of Christianity worldwide. 44,000! With that many variations of groups working independently, there will be problems, false doctrine, corruption, religious practices, political influences, and misuse of funds. On the flip side, there are going to be a lot of them that are worshiping God in spirit and truth, doing everything they can to fulfill the great commission. It’s not our place to attempt to dismantle all denominations we don’t see eye to eye with. This purification of the Church is explained in Mt 13:28 “And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves *said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up? 29 “But he *said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 ‘Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.” NASB95 The commission was not “go and build multi-million dollar facilities, sell My Word, and put on a good show.” The great commission is to go and make disciples. Go and teach. Go and make imitators of Christ. We must first mature in the Word of God and live our lives as an example displaying power and authority, operating in the gifts of the Spirit, and delivering the Truth. Then we are in a position to make true disciples. The church has a lot of problems. We need to make sure that we are part of the solution. How do we bring restoration to the church? One person at a time.
