Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Sunday

Today is the prophetic fulfillment of the Jewish feast of Pentecost.  Pentecost was an annual harvest festival that occurs once a year, 50 days after Passover.  On this day, the Israelite farmers would bring their firstfruit offerings (Lev 23:15-21).  For the Christian Church, today is the day that the Holy Spirit came to earth to dwell with us until the end times.  The Holy Spirit filled the upper room, and tongues of fire sat upon the heads of each of them, and they were filled with power and began to speak with new tongues.  (Acts 2:1–4)
There is a teaching today that says this is not a separate event in the Christian life and that everyone receives the Holy Spirit when they are born again.  This is partially true, but this is not the baptism.  When you are born again, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit of Promise but there is a separate event of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.  Just because you take a bath every day doesn’t mean you were Baptised in water.  Water Baptism is a separate public act of faith.  Just because you have the Holy Spirit in you doesn’t mean you were baptized with Holy Spirit and power.  Some examples describe Christians being baptized with the Holy Spirit after they were born again (Acts 19:2, Acts 8:14-16, Acts 11:15), but the verse that I would like to highlight is (Acts 10:44–48 (NASB95) 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message.  45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.  46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God.  Then Peter answered, 47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” 48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.  Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.)  This event took place about ten years after Pentecost at the house of Cornelius, who was a gentile Roman Centurian that lived in a pagan city called Caesarea.  If a gentile Roman soldier who hadn’t even been baptized in water can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit and power, then anyone can.  If you haven’t been baptized with fire yet (Matt 3:11), I encourage you to seek it.  (Mark 16:20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.) Signs and wonders will follow them that believe and confirm that the word you preach is true (Mk 16:17-20).  If you do not see signs, wonders, power, and miracles in your life, seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Be blessed and be BOLD,
Pastor Charlie
